After what seems like years and years of waiting, Queen fans finally get the good news they’ve been waiting for… the Queen biopic is finally happening!

The band announced on their website that the film, titled “Bohemian Rhapsody”, will attempt to tell the full story of the band including their epic performances such as LIVE AID. It will be directed by Bryan Singer (director of the successful X-Men franchise) and has been in development for almost 12 years!

Rami Malek has been cast as Freddie Mercury but he wasn’t the first name brandied about for the coveted role. Sasha Baron Cohen (of Borat and Ali G fame) was originally attached to the project but walked away from the role due to creative differences. According to Sasha, he wanted the movie to focus on Freddie and his hedonistic, rock n’ roll lifestyle, while the surviving members of the band wanted to tell the entire Queen story, including a substantial part of the movie about how they carried on as a band. You can read more about Sasha Baron Cohen’s decision here.

According to Queen guitarist Brian May, Malek has really thrown himself into the role and the band are really excited for his performance.

Now the real question is will Rami Malek be able to pull off Freddie’s one-of-a-kind vocals? We now have our first look of Malek performing as Freddie Mercury, recreating the band’s Live Aid show, alongside Ben Hardy as Roger Taylor and Gwilym Lee as Brian May.

Take a look!

What do you think?

(Should they have gone with Marc Martel, the Canadian who took YouTube by storm with his spot-on rendition of “Somebody To Love” a few years back?)
