On this date 22 years ago, the original Jurassic Park opened, setting a box office weekend record of $47 million. When the dust settled, the film brought in $900 million worldwide, making it the highest grossing film of 1993.

According to IMDB, Universal Studios paid author Michael Crichton $2 million for the rights to the Jurassic Park novel before it was even published.  Pre-production on the film began before the book hit the shelves. Now that’s what you call a smart investment.

Jurassic World, starring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, is set to open in North America tomorrow.
