The 97th Academy Awards nominations have been announced, with “Emilia Pérez” leading the pack at 13 nominations, marking it as the most-nominated non-English-language film in Oscars history. Notably, Karla Sofía Gascón, starring in “Emilia Pérez,” has become the first openly transgender actor to receive a nomination for Best Actress.

Following closely, both “Wicked” and “The Brutalist” have secured 10 nominations each. “Wicked” features standout performances by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, earning them nominations for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, respectively.

In the Best Actor category, Timothée Chalamet received his second nomination for his portrayal in “A Complete Unknown,” as Bob Dylan. The biopic has received 9 nominations total.

Demi Moore also marks a significant milestone with a Best Actress nomination for “The Substance.”

However, the nominations also brought notable snubs that have sparked discussions among film enthusiasts. Angelina Jolie, despite critical acclaim for her role in Maria, was overlooked in the Best Actress category. Similarly, Nicole Kidman, who received praise for her performance in Babygirl, did not secure a nomination. In the Best Actor category, Daniel Craig was a surprising omission for his role in Queer, a performance that had garnered significant attention during the awards season.

Additionally, Dune: Part Two secured a Best Picture nomination and several technical nods, yet director Denis Villeneuve was notably absent from the Best Director lineup, marking the second time he has been overlooked for his work on the Dune series.

The ceremony, hosted by Conan O’Brien, is scheduled for March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The event will also honour industry figures such as Quincy Jones and Richard Curtis.
