Coming to IMAX theaters starting Friday, Sept. 22 is a newly restored edition of Talking Heads’ landmark 1984 concert movie Stop Making Sense.

Its release commemorates the 30th anniversary of the four shows the late director Jonathan Demme filmed during early December of 1983 at the Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles, capturing the inventive and visually striking performance the band put on in support of its then-new album “Speaking in Tongues.”

The film played to rave reviews upon its release and has since been named to the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry, generally considered one of if not the best concert film of all times. Talking Heads, which came to a halt in 1991, regrouped last week to premiere the new version at the Toronto International Film Festival, where frontman David Byrne told the audience he was thrilled “Stop Making Sense” was returning to theaters.

Stop Making Sense will show exclusively in IMAX theaters for a week, then also open in conventional theaters on Sept. 29.

During August Talking Heads also released a newly remastered version of the “Stop Making Sense” soundtrack, which originally came out in conjunction with the movie.

The current edition features 18 songs from the shows, double what appeared on the original album.
