In July of 1988, Magnum P.I and Punky Brewster had just aired their final episodes a couple months earlier and Murphy Brown & Empty Nest were a few months away from making their TV debut.

The Edmonton Oilers, led by Wayne Gretzky, were still enjoying their Stanley Cup win after sweeping the Boston Bruins 4-0. And in music, Michael Jackson’s fifth single from the album Bad, “Dirty Diana”, broke the record to have five consecutive charting singles from the same album at the top of the Billboard Hot 100.

One of the biggest events of 1988 in Vancouver happened on Monday, July 18th, Sting touched down in Vancouver to play BC Place Stadium on his “Nothing Like The Sun Tour” in support of his second solo album since The Police disbanded two years earlier. It’s estimated 40,000 tickets were sold for this show, but 100,000 people will tell you they were there. We touched Sting’s hand at the concert and we still haven’t washed it off!

The setlist was a good mix of some of his new solo material mixed with some Police classics.

Remember leaving any event at BC Place when the original roof was up and the doors would be open blowing winds that would match a Category 3 hurricane? That was never easy to navigate, especially after “staying hydrated” at a concert.

Unless you had one of these bad boys, you were going to have some trouble getting near Sting himself.

Were you at this show? If so, share your story with us on Twitter @jack969van!
