Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down…

Don’t lie, you know the words. And whether you knew it or not at the time, you’ve probably been rickrolled (when someone tricks you into watching the video for Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up”). Never been rickrolled before? Neither have these adorable kittens playing hockey. Well, the rickroll turns 30 today.

It was 30 years ago today that Astley burst onto the music scene with his catchy pop hit that reached the #1 spot in an astonishing 25 different countries. I was seven at the time and had just started collecting my own cassettes; something about “Never Gonna Give You Up” spoke to me so being seven I begged for Whenever You Need Somebody, finally got my parent’s to cave and then proceeded to rickroll myself over and over for a good month straight. Every time the song finished I couldn’t rewind it fast enough. My poor parents.

I listened to that cassette A LOT. Which is probably why I also fondly add “Whenever You Need Somebody” and “Together Forever” to my ’80s mixtapes. But to be honest, I don’t really remember any songs on Side B. I guess I was just too busy rickrolling myself over and over.

So there you have it, I was rickrolling myself for 30 years (and before it was cool, I might add). And I’m proud of it! Rick Astley rules!!
