The Netflix hit Stranger Things is set in the early ’80s, so naturally we are picking up on all the references to yesteryear!

Walkie-Talkies: Just like we did when we were kids, the boys in Stranger Things use walkie-talkies to communicate between houses (and although the walk-talkie came about in the 1930’s, invented by a Canadian, no less) they really help set the scene. Stranger Things is riddled with older technology in general – like phone cords, bunny ears and no caller ID!

Arcades: chatting at the JACK studios, many of us remember scrounging for quarters and spending time at the local arcade. The arcade is a prominent local hangout for the kids of Stranger Things in season 2, and we dig it!

Big Hair: Everyone in this show is sporting a retro coiffe, and ’80s hair was large and in charge! One of our favourite scenes in season 2 is when Steve tells Dustin the secret to his fabulously feathery mullet is “four puffs of the Farrah Fawcett spray”.

All the E.T. References: If you haven’t picked up on this theme yet, you will now! Steven Spielberg’s 1982 hit E.T. The Extra Terrestrial is often referenced throughout both seasons, especially when it comes to Eleven. Just like E.T., she’s an outsider who discovers new things like the television and has an affinity for junk food in the form of Eggo waffles.

Wood Paneling: Maybe not the most attractive home decor trend, but it sure does bring us back to cherished basement hangs! Yeah!

Awesome soundtrack: From Toto’s “Africa” to Corey Hart’s “Sunglasses at Night”, Stranger Things has a great soundtrack that’s rooted in the ’80s. Check it out!
