P!nk was the recipient of this year’s Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the MTV Video Music Awards. Taking the stage to accept her award, she used the moment to tell a story of a time her six year old daughter said “I’m the ugliest girl I know.”

The flood of emotions that come after hearing your child make such a statement are imaginable to any parent: anger, confusion, desperation. Instead of acting on any of those natural responses, Pink goes on to describe how she used this opportunity to teach her young daughter about self-empowerment.
