Iggy Pop’s magnum opus, Lust for Life, turns 40 today! It’s an awesome album that also had a bit of a renaissance in the late ’90s so in celebration we dug into the musical archives to unearth 6 Things You Might Not Know about Iggy Pop’s biggest album.

  1. The album was produced by Iggy Pop, engineer Colin Thurston and some superstar named David Bowie. They credited themselves in the liner notes as the Belway Brothers.
  2. The album was produced at the legendary Hansa Tonstudio in Berlin. Other albums that were recorded there include U2’s Achtung Baby, The Psychedelic Furs Midnight To Midnight and David Bowie’s “Heroes”.
  3. David Bowie wrote the music for the title track “Lust For Life”, including the distinctive guitar riff. He came up with music while playing a ukulele. Watch Bowie cover the song live at Rockpalast ’96.
  4. The lyrics to “Lust for Life” relate to Iggy’s hard-partying lifestyle and heroin use, which is probably why it fit so well in the soundtrack to the cult classic ’90s film Trainspotting.
  5. The album was released just a few weeks after the death of Elvis and since Iggy Pop’s record label put the focus on Elvis’ back catalog, promotion for Lust for Life was initially quite minimal.
  6. Tom Jones covered “Lust For Life” with The Pretenders on his 1999 album Reload.
