This is the story of Mr. Avocado, the avocado that started a massive debate, scratch that, an argument that has been going on between my wife and I since December of last year!

It all started with an episode of The Big Bang Theory where Sheldon and Leonard were talking about who gets what upon no longer living together and the avocado plant that they had been growing was brought to light. I was fascinated by the thought of growing my own avocado plant so I quickly went online to learn how to do it.

The following day I decided to stop and buy an avocado to begin the experiment. I set the little fellow up and even tweeted about it. 4 days later…I was bored.

No sprout, nothing…Not my cup of tea anymore.

My wife then took over the duties of what she calls “giving the avocado love and attention”. She changed the water, moved it into the sunlight during the day and even talked to it. Months go by and I tell her she is fighting a losing battle. According to the internet, the thing should have sprouted roots by this time. However, now she was determined to see it through.

I actually moved on to growing Sea Monkeys which were much more fascinating then a boring, old avocado pit floating in a jar. Why Sea Monkeys? Well, mainly because it’s something I never did as a kid and I always kind of wanted to try it out. The box said for 6 and up so, at 39, I was in the wheelhouse.

Then one day, as I came home from a run, I discovered my wife and both kids huddled around the avocado that my wife was now referring to as Mr. Avocado. (You would have figured my daughter, Piper, would have given the nickname) It sprung a tiny root. Well rejoice! Mr. Avocado was alive and kicking.

Within a few days his roots were expanding faster than you could imagine and a sprout was emerging from the top.

Then it happened. My wife finally realized why it had taken so long. When I originally started the project I put the pit upside down, but somehow nature found a way (Jurassic park references).

Mr. Avacodo has since been on a road trip across the country. (when we moved back to Vancouver), almost been eaten by our dog Gomez and had his little stem broken…but yet, he prevails.

Fast forward to now, Mr. Avocado is sprouting leaves and is ready for a new pot that has been made by my daughter (see below). My wife is fearful that the transition from water to dirt will hurt the plant but I think he is going to be alright.

And that’s where the argument starts. My wife says that since I gave up on the little guy so long ago I can no offer any parenting advice. She also says that if we ever got divorced she would get full custody of Mr. Avocado.

What do you think? I started it but she, apparently, gave it the love and attention it needed to tackle this thing we call life!
