On this day in 1984, Prince released what many consider to be his greatest album, the soundtrack to the film Purple Rain. And now that the ownership of his estate has been mostly sorted his incredible back catalog (which is full of unreleased recordings) is being repackaged and expanded. So it makes sense that a Purple Rain reissue is the first big release since his death.

 

However, this reissue is far from a cash grab. Included in the 2 disc deluxe version is a whole batch of unreleased songs, half of which have never been released! If you want even more, you can upgrade to the 4 disc expanded edition, which includes another disc of single edits and b-sides plus the concert DVD Prince And The Revolution Live at the Carrier Dome, Syracuse, NY, March 30, 1985. For everyone who was fortunate enough to see Prince perform live, this concert DVD might be worth buying the expanded edition all by itself!

 

Vinyl junk junkies fret not, you’re covered too! They’ve released two versions: the standard 2015 Paisley Park remaster and a limited edition picture disc vinyl. This is the first time the Paisley Park remaster has been made available on vinyl so Prince fans will want this version. Remember, Prince oversaw this remaster himself the year before he passed.
