I know that Record Store Day has come and gone and you are tired of hearing about all the records that are on sale. Listening to pretentious collectors and musicians bragging about their record collection and how cool it is.

Well… let me make one more plea for team Vinyl.

Mp3’s make you fat.

Ya, I said it!

I know the first thought that comes to your head, “I can run the sea wall with my headphones in and loose weight.”  Ya sure, when was the last time you worked out?  It’s okay, last time I was in the gym “Rock Me Amadeus” by Falco was the #1 single of the year and Richard Simmons was kind of normal!

But hear me out.  Not only does Vinyl keep you active, it’s a social listening experience.

When you have a party and put on a playlist of MP3’s on your computer you hit play and walk away.  There is no experience.  But if you have records at a party they almost become a guest.  You put on a record and pop a crate in front of the player and watch the crowd form around it.  Not only do people flip through to find what they like, they open and look at records and it starts a conversation.  Then, when the record you picked finally hits the platter you get excited about your jam and usually start bragging about how you picked it and the conversation continues.

This is especially true if you pick a song like this:

Records also keep you in shape.  Not only are you getting up to flip the side every 5 or 6 songs, but you are up picking the next record to put on the player.  Also, anyone who has a collection of a few hundred records will tell you, moving day is like training for the World’s Strongest Man or Woman competition.  By the end of the moving day, you swear you are just going to leave them next time you move!

So yes, it’s a lot of work having vinyl, and yes, you sound like a snob talking about your collection.  BUT! It is a social activity and keeps you in shape!

Will you start a vinyl collection knowing the health benefits it provides?  Or, does it still sound pretentious and annoying?

Either way, your music collection isn’t really about keeping in shape, it’s an expression of who you are and relies on one thing:

Your love of music.
