Denim on Denim! How we Acquired the Canadian Tuxedo!

But how did Canada become associated with this classic look?

Supposedly, it all began with Bing Crosby, the famous crooner, who in 1951, was refused entry to a Canadian hotel because he was dressed in head-to-toe denim. So, one of Mr. Crosby’s friends contacted Levi Strauss and Co. (known today as Levis). The designers created a custom tuxedo for Mr. Crosby so that he could wear denim to any fancy establishment! There was even a leather patch on the inside that read “Notice to All Hotel Men”  – launching the classic, casual, Canadian Tuxedo!

Other people claim that the term can be tracked back to the 2001 US film Super Troopers.

A trooper asks his Sergeant: “How’s it going Denim Dan? You look like the president, chairman, and CEO of Levi Strauss. Hey, where’d you get the Canadian tuxedo?”

Regardless, the trend is no longer a fashion-blunder, so you can go ahead and wear the Canadian Tuxedo with pride. Carry on Canadians!
