Knowing they wouldn’t be able to perform the opera section live, and being fairly certain they wouldn’t be able to make an appearance on the BBC’s Top of the Pops to perform (or mime) Bohemian Rhapsody, the band decided to throw together what money they could to record a quick and simple full length music video – the first of its kind.

Fearing the idea of the single being matched to the usual visual of Pan’s People – the dance group for the show, the band decided providing Top of the Pops with a full length performance video was their best option. The video was filmed over four hours, with the visual effects done on set, and little post-production before the finished product was shipped off to the BBC.

When the video finally hit the airwaves, both Queen and the BBC audience were viewing it for the first time, setting off the modern era of full length promotional music videos. And oh, the director of the video – Bruce Gowers? He went one to direct a little show known as “American Idol.”
