If you happened to be on social media, especially twitter, late yesterday afternoon you may have witnessed it slowly explode over the Toronto Blue Jays game, and more specifically – the 7th inning. If you’re completely bored by baseball, or don’t understand the fuss but want to be able to nod along in conversations, we’ve put together this convenient GIF Guide to Why Everyone Is Freaking Out Over the Blue Jays (And why you should too!).

Essential Info:

1. The Blue Jays are Canada’s only Major League Baseball (MLB) team.

2. They broke a 22 year playoff drought this year.

3.This first playoff series against the Texas Rangers is a best-of-5 series. The Blue Jays lost the first two games (in Toronto) so the only possible way they could win the series would be to win 3 games in a row, which is nearly impossible…Got it? Good. Here comes the GIFs.

WHAT EXACTLY EVERYONE WAS FREAKING OUT ABOUT

The game was tied in the 7th inning, when the Rangers managed to score on a technicality after a throwing error from the Blue Jays catcher after the play appeared to be dead (meaning no one can score points). Basically, it was a really weird rule and the umpire (referee) initially was like

“Nah, this play is dead, friends. That guy can’t score”

But then the other umpires were like, “Nope. that’s actually legit. That totally counts.” The Blue Jays manager (coach) was like “WHAT, NOW?” and the Blue Jays players were like “WHAT, NOW?!”  and the Blue Jays fans were like “AH HELL, NO!”

But it was legit. So the bad guys (Texas) had taken the lead, 3-2. And the Blue Jays were angry. Oh, so angry.

So, the second half of the 7th inning came around – meaning the Blue Jays were on offence.  When a player on the defense drops the ball, or doesn’t make an ‘easy’ catch it’s called an error. And the Texas Rangers HAD THREE OF THEM IN THE 7TH INNING. That is A LOT.

Because of all the errors, the Blue Jays had 3 players on the bases (bases loaded) and the Rangers managed to have 0 outs. 0. Remember, they need 3 outs to end the inning and go on offence. This was very, very bad for the Rangers and an incredible turn of events for the Blue Jays.

Because of yet another Ranger not being able to catch the ball, the Blue Jays were able to score a run and tied the game. The Rangers had one out. Blue Jays fans were starting to get pretty darn excited.

Now, history happened. The Blue Jays are really, really, good at home runs. And one of their best home run hitters was at the plate: Jose Bautista. And Jose… well, Jose did what Jose does and got a 3-run home run. And this when the true freaking out began.

The Jays went up 6-3 and never looked back, winning the game AND the series against all odds after being down 2-0. And that, is why everyone was freaking out over the Blue Jays. Oh, and the BOSS bat flip from Bautista when he knew he hit a home run.
